Departing for Rome

Leaving for vacation is always exciting but stress inducing as well. I dropped the dogs off and picked up the rental car from the local airport. Renting a car one way from New Haven to JFK is cheaper than hiring a car to take us. It's a little more work, but a lot less money.

Because I did not want to carry the GPS all over Europe, I left the GPS home and took my chances. I should not have taken my chances because somehow I got lost. I don't know how I did it, but I thought I was lost and rolled down the window to ask for directions. I asked three times at a stop light and got three completely different directions. Finally someone offered for me to follow him and that's what I did.

We dropped the car off at Budget and headed over to Aer Lingus. We checked in and waited at our gate for our plane. The plane was on time, and the seats were pretty comfortable for cheap seats. We had televisions in the head rests and it really made the time pass quickly. We watched movies, played games and did everything but sleep.

We got into Dublin at some insane hour and waited the two and a half hours for our flight. The plane was more comfortable on the short jump from Dublin to Rome. Lots of nice folks on flight. We grabbed our bags pretty easily and I spotted an ATM. I knew I could wait but I had ordered cash ahead of time. Next time I'll just use my ATM card at the airport when we land.

Our Rome cabs dude was waving a sign with our names and it and I was so glad I chose this option. We were exhausted and if I had tried to navigate the train system I don't know if my nerves could have taken it. He drove us all over Rome, pointing at things but we were in a fog. He got us to our B&B and we checked in without a problem. We were at the B&B around 4pm. My goal was to make it to at least 8pm before sleeping.

Passport Renewal

I can't believe it's been five years since we applied for passports. Victoria's passport expired this year and the process for children is pretty much like applying all over again. In the last five years they seem to have gotten their act together for single parents. The questions on the application, and the directions, seem much clearer for single parents than before.

Victoria is thrilled to be rid of the pixie-cut photo on her old passport. Eighty-five dollars and ten minutes in the post office, and we should be good to go for August!

Memories of third grade field trip

Given the problems we have had with this year's teacher, and several situations where safety was an issue, I volunteered to the school's principal to chaperone each and every field trip. Actually I volunteered to develop a chaperone training but no one liked my idea. The last field trip did not have enough chaperones and the teacher sent home a note saying the children were running and it was dangerous. Attending field trips is the only way I am comfortable ensuring for my child's safety.

The note came home on November 2 dated October 31. It announced a field trip to the Science Center in West Hartford for November 9. Chaperones must pay 6.00 and children 7.50. I hustled over to the bank for exact change and sent in the money requesting to be a chaperone, please contact me if there is a problem. No contact. Victoria isn't sure I am a chaperone because her teacher has indicated OTHER parents are chaperones, but has not mentioned me.

Last night at basketball practice, I had a conversation with a mother in the other third grade class. She was to chaperone today and was sent home a note indicating she ought to bring a bagged lunch, wear comfortable shoes, what time to arrive and what to expect. I was noteless.

I show up at school at 9:05am, knowing OTHER chaperones are expected to be there for 9:15am. Eli's father is there to chaperone and the teacher gave a stern lecture to Eli on how she did not choose his father to be a chaperone and due to his inconsideration, now his father had taken a day off for nothing. Eli's father held strong and said to his son in front of the teacher, "You made a mistake buddy, I don't want you to feel badly about this. We are going to have a great day." He told me he was ordered to attend by his wife and there was no way he was not going. He said he does not like this teacher and we agreed we ought to get together soon.

We all waited in the class as the teacher asked a child to get her a tea bag, another child for half n half, another child was sent to close a door, and the entire class was silent for two full minutes while she tried to figure out what tomorrow's hot lunch choice was so she could take orders. It was interesting to see her in action. We were given our assignments. I was not surprised to see my group of three contained Victoria and the two toughest girls.

The teacher was on the phone or whatever device she has sticking in her ear, and said it is NOT ok for a parent to follow the bus to the Center. She sends a child to get the principal. The principal came in and explained she could not prevent the parents from following the bus and going to a public place.

At 9:25am the other teacher announced the bus was ready to leave. Our teacher was still sending kids to the bathroom. We boarded the bus, some kids sat three to a seat. We left at 9:45am when we were to leave at 9:30am. It was an excruciating hour drive on a school bus constantly telling kids to sit down. I sat near Eli's father and the other four rows of seats behind us all had kids. The teachers all sat up front, near each other. The little girl sitting next to me shows me a pair of pants she has in her backpack. I asked why she brought pants with her and she said, "In case I have an accident." Great.

On the bus two in my group are fighting with each other. One girl is crying. I must have looked perplexed because all of the children explained to me they always fight. Always? Yes, always. Why are they in the same group? They looked puzzled. It was clear, I was being punished. This teacher is dumber than I thought, giving me two challenging children. Little did she know I had a bag of chocolate and was not afraid to use it.

We arrived at the Science Center at 11am. We are half an hour later than planned and immediately went into our project. One of my group members had difficulty working with her partner and seems to have some impulse control difficulties. I liked her though. Victoria worked with her two friends, one of which speaks no English. She called Victoria Victori. Cute kid. I would have liked her in my group because I need to brush up on Spanish.

After the project, which most found boring, we went to use the bathrooms then went back to the bus to eat our lunch. This is truly torture. After thirty minutes and a million times of passing trash up, we exit the bus once again and have approximately one hour in the Science Center. All the children have been counting, recounting, stealing, waving and showing their money for hours and were looking forward to the gift shop.

Thirty minutes in the gift shop. Kids with five dollars wanted items that were twelve dollars and other children were given six dollars but would only spend one. Victoria was using her allowance and was willing to spend it all on yet more stuffed animals. We have bags full of stuffed animals. Oh heck, we have rooms full of stuffed animals.

Eli's father and I walked around the museum looking at animals and exhibits. When we got to an area I'd stand by the exit. I was positive one of my group was going to be lost. It occurred to me I didn't even know their last names. Realizing they were really behaving as best as they could, I passed candy out discretely. We don't want other children to know we are breaking the rules.

We walked over to another exhibit room and I hear my group in a sing song to their fellow classmates, "Victoria's Mom gave us candy, Victoria's mom gave us candy neener neener neener."

What else could I do? I had already given them the candy. I sang back, "If you don't be quiet you're not getting any moooooore."

Silence! Gotta love it.

We were to board the bus at 1:30pm because it was going to take longer to get back than planned. I gathered my group up to head to the bus and I passed the teacher who was saying, "Let's go see the dinosaurs" to her group.

We boarded the bus, which had parents and kids, but no teachers. The teachers were all late. Victoria asked for her gift bag and I realized I had left it somewhere inside. Victoria immediately cried and I ran off the bus in search. Someone had found it. Disaster averted.

The bus ride home was twice as long as the bus ride there, or at least it felt like it. The little girl next to me said, "I'm so proud of myself for not wetting today." Me too. Me too.

Practice Packing Lite

Our trip last week enabled us to try out our packing lite theory for our Europe trip this summer. I brought enough for five days. I used my new carry on luggage size, though too large for an Aer Lingus flight.

I brought too many toiletries. I didn't use half of the lotions/sprays/whatnot I brought. I didn't use the straightener once, opting for my hair up the entire time. While I didn't wear makeup the whole week, as I thought would happen, I still can't bring myself to leave it all home. I've learned to pair it down a bit.

I didn't need too many pairs of socks because I wear sandals most of the trip. I did run out of books by Thursday so three was not enough for a week. I only brought my point and shoot camera, and am wondering if I should either leave lenses at home along with the flash, or try and make it through Europe with only the point and shoot.

Victoria did fine as well. She listened to her IPOD and used her touch a lot. My smart phone did a lot of work for me that I might ordinarily use a laptop for: it was able to get addresses to area attractions, directions, and movie times. I didn't listen to music at all, and I'm wondering if perhaps next trip I'll just bring along the dual plug for Victoria's IPOD. It doesn't seem worth it to bring my Zune when I don't use it.

I think we'll be able to manage two weeks in Europe with carry on sized luggage with a small back pack or tote as well.

Review of Barclay Towers, a timeshare in Virginia Beach

I traded my crappy timeshare for April vacation at the Barclay Towers in Virginia Beach. The timeshare units are all one bedroom and feature a boardwalk/beach view. This means the set up is pretty unique. When you enter the door, the queen size bed is immediately in front of you, set up as a small bedroom unit with a good size closet. Walking down the narrow hallway, you pass the good sized bathroom into the living room with sliding doors out to the balcony overlooking the beach. The kitchen is small, with a full sized refrig, mini dishwasher and small stove and microwave. The units were all in working order and there were plenty of pots and pans.

The furniture was in good condition. Cable television was limited but included 3 HBO channels. The coach opened to a sofa bed, but we never used it. I didn't find the couch very comfortable to sit on but the chair was ok.

The carpets and flooring all appeared to be in near new condition. The air conditioning unit was very loud. I mean very loud. The position of the bedroom, near the door to the hallway, could be a problem if people out there are noisy. We had one morning of some loud folks leaving at 5am, and I welcomed the air conditioning unit kicking on at the right time to drown them out.

The people at the front desk appeared bored and didn't perk up when I asked questions on the first day such as, "where can we grab some milk". The property is sold out for timeshare buyers but do rent out hotel suites to other guests. Continental breakfast was available to hotel guests and timeshare guests were given breakfast on Monday at 9am along with a little presentation on the area happenings. When we checked in, we were given a packet which included area attractions along with direction on how to get there. The check in/check out procedure was clear, and we received instructions two weeks before we were scheduled to arrive.

It was great to see the sunrise each morning from the balcony or, if too chilly, from the living room. It was a great spot to people watch too, as there are all sorts of interesting characters roller blading, biking, walking, running and kite flying right outside of the unit. We were given the second floor, probably not the most desirable floor, but we liked it because we could easily bypass the two elevators easy enough. We had great weather last week, and all days except one were warm enough to lay out on the beach.

The indoor pool was adequate and in good shape. There were plenty of staff to keep up with towels, sweeping and keeping the general areas clean. This is where we found the friendliest staff members. We received trash removal service and fresh towels daily. We received maid service twice during the week which included refreshing the bath & body works toiletries and a vacuum/dust/clean. Typically these services do not come with timeshare stays unless you pay extra.

The location is near 9th Street, right on Atlantic Avenue. Parking is limited in front of the unit, but there is a parking garage right across the street. After the weekend folks cleared out, we had no difficulties finding a spot out front of the building. Plenty of places to eat and snack lined Atlantic Avenue. Lots of little shops and such were all a walk away. Vendors were all over renting family bikes, single bikes, roller blades and such.

This is one of my favorite drive-to vacations we've had, in the six years or so we've been trading for spring breaks. I would definitely return to Virginia Beach, and definitely would stay at this timeshare spot again.

Packing Lite

I'd like to try and pack only one carry on for our Europe trip. I can't imagine taking trains all over Italy and having to take a large suitcase. Who is going to care if I wear the same 4 outfits for two weeks? I'll wash them, promise!

Yet each time I mention wanting to take as little luggage as possible, people seem shocked. My only real concern is taking back treasures we find in Italy. I thought maybe I'd bring a fold up tote bag (Rick Steve's of course) and sending that through luggage to be able to carry on the treasures.

I'd really like to try it!

Italy Planning

Aer Lingus released summer fares at the prices I was hoping to pay. It wasn't my favorite airline when we fly to Paris a few years ago, but this is strictly about price. The people are friendly enough, it's the layover in Dublin that feels like a time warp.

We got open multi city fare for about 700 each. We're flying into Rome to spend three days there and out of Venice after spending four days there after our tour of Amalfi and Florence. I was insane about spending the rainy weather-time reading on the places to stay. It's overwhelming.

Trip Advisor has 42 reviews, mostly favorable. I booked a superior double for 94 Euros a night. Most of the spots offer breakfast with the nightly rate and this place is no different. I requested a quiet room based on some of the reviews I've read.

I chose each place to hopefully experience a bit of residential life in the spots in Italy, a bit off from the main tourist spots.

Womens Big East Tournament

We spent five days last weekend at the Big East Women's tournament in Hartford. We learned it's not likely we'll want to see four games in one day.

There were lots of characters in the crowd. We had a familiar face sitting near us with a big ole UCONN hat on his head which reminded me of a Dr. Suess hat. He seemed hurt when people didn't chant with him. He'd go out to a platform and raise his arms up and try to get the crowd to spell, chant and sing. We sat next to three lovely people whom we became friendly with. I suppose we must have had good seats because each time we arrived, someone was sitting in our seats and had to be asked to move.

Victoria spent some time watching Mr. Blue Man jump up and down in section 235, behind the home team's basket. He really expends a lot of energy jumping up and down and hollering by himself.

Lots and lots of short haired women who wore fleece vests and comfortable shoes. I say comfortable shoes because they were not wearing sneakers, like I was. There were quite a few men in groups, in their 30s or so. These were not men who gave up on the Husky-men but true fans of women's basketball. Very nice to see.

Watching the games live are really different than on television. You sort of take the athletes for granted when you watch them on television. The UCONN women, who typically I end up cheering against because I want the game to be more interesting, seemed to be the only women in the conference who played anything like the men. We watched a Southern CT Women's basketball team this year and I was amazed at the lack of inside game. All of the dribble penetration ended with passes out to the perimeter for an outside shot.

It's almost becoming a completely different game. I like the way UCONN plays, not for the obvious reasons, but because they have inside game.

In retrospect, we probably shouldn't have gone to the championship game. The parking, only being one game, and it being a school night made for a late night. The game wasn't terribly interesting.

European Airfare Woes

I've been hunting and hunting for fare prices to Italy for the summer. All the prices around around the 1200 dollar mark. Every once in awhile Priceline sends me an email telling me I can bid again. So I bid 700 dollars and it's never accepted. I'm hoping there is at least a little change in prices soon.

Outgoing Board of Education holds Special Meeting

East Haven, CT – The current Board of Education will hold its last meeting this evening at the East Haven High School beginning at 7 pm. Tonight’s Special Meeting, which could prove to be extremely contentious, includes the following agenda items that were tabled on October 27, 2009 when the members of the current BOE last met:

1. Discussion and Possible Action of Central Office Reorganization Plan

2. Discussion and Possible Action to Appoint Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction

3. Discussion and Possible Action on Assistant Superintendent’s Contract

4. Discussion and Possible Action on Superintendent’s Contract

Although the Superintendent’s and Assistant Superintendent’s Contracts are extended through August 31, 2011 and June 30, 2011 respectively, there is an open issue pertaining to their annual pay increases.

Mayor April Capone Almon and the newly-elected BOE members will be waiting to see if the current BOE members approve a pay increase for Superintendent Anthony Serio and Assistant Superintendent Frank Meoli for the current 2009-2010 fiscal year. Earlier this year Mayor April Capone Almon announced that neither she nor her staff would be receiving an annual pay increase. During that same period the Mayor also negotiated pay freezes, or the equivalent in other concessions with each of the Town’s six unions. To date, none of the Town’s Board of Education union or non-union employees has done the same, including Mr. Serio and Mr. Meoli.

In addition to calling into question the possible pay raises, Mayor April Capone Almon and the newly-elected BOE members have also expressed a concern about moving forward and approving a proposed Central Office Reorganization Plan that includes the appointment of an additional Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction without their review and input. Several concerns have been raised regarding how the plan will affect the Board of Education’s current budget, as well as future budgets. These questions are not only being raised by the Mayor and the newly-elected BOE members, but were also asked by many of the current BOE members at its last meeting on October 27th.

“With all these unanswered questions still out there, the current Board of Education needs to table these agenda items until such time the newly-elected members of the Board of Education have an opportunity to review each one of them and provide their input.”, said Mayor April Capone Almon. “To do anything less would be disparaging to the residents who voted for a change on the Board of Education.”

The newly elected members of the Board of Education take office effective November 14, 2009.

I just became aware that the Board of Education meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 10th has been cancelled and that there will be a “special” Board of Education meeting this evening.



On the agenda for this evening’s meeting is the discussion and possible action of the Central Office reorganization, discussion and possible action to appoint an Assistant Superintendent, discussion and possible action on Assistant Superintendent’s contract as well as discussion and possible action on the Superintendent’s contract. It is noted that some of these items are to be discussed in Executive Session.

I respectfully ask that each of you give all of these items serious consideration and ask that you table them until a later date.



I think making these decisions right now would be fiscally irresponsible. I don’t know how you are able to justify creating this position when there are still teachers and programs that were cut and have not yet been brought back. If there is money in the budget for this position – then use that money for the good of the students. Buy books; put programs back in place, etc... If memory serves me correctly, it was stated at the last meeting that the creation of the position of Assistant Superintendent would “lighten the load” for our current Superintendent. Times are tough, I would venture to guess that every person who is employed in the United States has been asked to do more with less; and I am one of those people. My suggestion to the Superintendent would be that if he can’t handle doing more with less, then maybe it’s time for him to move on.



It is clear that by cancelling tomorrow’s meeting and having tonight’s “special” meeting, that you do not want the public’s input. It also looks like you are all trying to pull a fast one and are trying to “stick it ” to the Town of East Haven and it’s taxpayers because some of you were not re-elected to the Board of Education. There are also numerous rumors around town that the person who is in line for this new position has a father who was very generous to John Finkle’s mayoral campaign and that is another reason why you are all rushing to get this done before the new Board takes it’s place.



Your legacy when your tenure on the Board of Education ends should be that you truly put the children of East Haven first and that you fought the good fight for them. If you approve the items on tonight’s agenda, your legacy will be that you never had the best interest of our children at heart, your interests were in only things that benefited you or your political party and that the only thing that you have accomplished is making fools of yourselves and the Town of East Haven.



Please think long and hard before rushing to make decisions that will ultimately have a negative impact on our children.

The Week in Orlando

Sandy and Darlene spent four days with us in the condo. The heat and humidity stayed pretty constant the week we were in Orlando. While I've been to Orlando many many times in August, this trip the heat was a deciding factor on how we toured the parks.

We visited Animal Kingdom Park and took advantage of the fastpass kiosk located near the Tree of Life. We got to the kiosk and stopped with a few other guests while the masses dashed off to one of the big attractions: Everest, Safari or Kali River Rapids.

We each obtained fastpasses for the major attractions within five minutes. This fastpass kiosk is in the experimental phase. I can't imagine how well it would have worked if people realized what those kiosks were there for. It appeared to be a kiosk for Bug's Life. We went to Kali River Rapids first and rode on it a few times. Fastpasses are typically not necessary for this attraction if you ride it first thing in the morning. Thoroughly soaked, we headed over to Dinosaur.

This was a pretty smart move because Dinosaur is mostly an inside experience. I got pretty cold in my wet clothes during the Dinosaur Experience. By the time we left the ride, I was able to enjoy the walk while thawing out. We went over to the Nemo experience. This show replaced one our favorite shows: Tarzan Rocks. The show was entertaining but I did not love it the way I loved Tarzan. Once is enough for me, I don't think I'd have to see the show again.

After Nemo, Darlene and I waited while the girls went on Mount Everest twice. They loved it! We wandered around, grabbed a snack and went on the Safari ride. Afer the Safari, we were pretty hot and tired and made the decision not to eat inside of the park. We walked the long, hot walk back to the car and used the GPS to find somewhere to eat. We chose Cracker Barrel and spent the rest of the afternoon there, playing checkers and having lunch.

Each evening contained some swim time for the girls. Typically on our trips, we would head out to a different park to enjoy the evening festivities but the heat really did a number on our energy levels. I'd chalk it up to old age, but the kids seemed affected as well.

We had not visited the Magic Kingdom before the cruise, and we were all excited to hit Main Street. I listened for the familiar music at the entrance to Main Street and hummed along. We caught the trolley musical morning show and watched it for awhile. I love that show, all of the cast members are dressed up in period garb complete with parasols and ride the trolley down Main Street, stopping in the middle for a song and dance.

We headed over to the Mountains and did both rides twice before heading out to the rest of the park. Space Mountain was closed for refurbishment. The girls were disappointed but we knew it would be closed ahead of time.

We went over to the rose garden and tried to find the spot where the ashes of a dear friend were lovingly spread. We spent a few minutes in the rose garden, talking about and remembering Amanda.

We spent quite a while waiting for the Monsters Laugh Floor and it sort of zapped us of our energy. We called it a day, after going to infinity and beyond. Of course, for us, calling it a day means spending an hour or so shopping on the way out of the park. The clouds were black, and a storm was heading in. We made it back to the condo in time to see a tremendous lightening storm.

Our MGM day was another hot day. We arrived at opening and we funneled up the street, waiting for the rope drop. We followed the crowds over to Toy Story Mania. In this park, unless you split up, you pretty much have to choose between Toy Story Mania, or Rock n Rollercoaster to ride without fastpasses.

We watched families split up and send some into the standby line and others get a fastpass. The fastpass line for Toy Story Mania seemed longer than the standby line, from the outside. We enjoyed walking through the attraction, checking out Mr. Potato Head and such. Darlene said they don't often go to the park, so most of it was a new experience for her. I tried to be nonchalant, but I think I kept saying, "You are DVC owners and you don't come to this park?" Yeah, I was real subtle.

I discovered on my last work trip that MGM is a great park to get done in one day. The attractions are close together, there is a lot of shade, and lots of opportunities for resting and rejuvenating. While other parks have long waits for short attractions, MGM can be the opposite. We went to get fastpasses for the girls at Rock n Rollercoaster, and they rode it a total of 3 times. They got to experience it from the front, back and middle and liked the front best.

While the girls were on the ride, Darlene and me went over to Star Tours. She said she had never been on it before. NEVER? I couldn't believe it! We went on Star Tours and enjoyed it. This attraction makes me motion sick at the same spot each time. There must be something off with the timing of the film and soundtrack. I feel the same way at Muppets 3D.

The girls called us and we met up with them and did the Great Movie Ride. I do love this attraction. We had lunch at the Backlot and people watched. We caught a pretty good street show by the Sanitation Department. Our timing was perfect.

Darlene and Sandy had a flight home on Wednesday early afternoon. I had planned on going to a park after dropping them off at the airport. I thought this might mean we'd make some evening shows at one of the parks. We slept in a bit, maybe by an hour, and had a leisurely breakfast. We fed the ducks outside and had a last swim.

It was a quiet ride to the airport. The girls had mixed emotions, having hit their saturation point of togetherness mixed with the sorrows of goodbyes. After dropping them off at the airport, we headed to the Magic Kingdom. We caught a bit of the afternoon parade, split a Dole Whip, and rode Splash Mountain a few more times. We had dinner at Sweet Tomatoes down the road from the condo. The food isn't fabulous, but it's a nice change from burger counter service. I wished we had thought to go there with Darlene and Sandy, they probably would have liked it.

Victoria's choice, we went to Animal Kingdom again on Thursday. We spent the morning riding Kali River Rapids, remembering this trip and many others where we got to know people while riding the rapids. We did the Safari and walked along the Jungle Trek. Because we did not see the Lion King on our last visit, we made a point to see is on this visit. It is still as fabulous as ever.

We agreed to leave the park at around 2pm and take a nap. I planned on doing some packing to make it easier in the evening. We headed out to Downtown Disney in the evening and did some shopping. We were surprised we didn't really find anything we 'must' have. We split a sandwich from Earl of Sandwich, watched a show on stage, and headed back to the condo at 8pm.

Friday was our last day in Orlando. Our flight was at 5pm, allowing some time to tour a park in the morning. We arrived at Epcot at 8:30am. We followed some folks through a gate and got hunted down by a security guard stating we had to walk around the fence to get our bags checked. I'm not sure how my parking pass, diamond parking, was any advantage over other parking if I had to walk all the way around. We stood in line, everyone sweating profusely before 9am. At 8:50am, we entered the gates and the entire mob headed over to the LAND to Soarin' Over California. There was a rope there and we waited again until 9am, where several cast members walked us to the Land.

We road Soarin' in row 1! YAY for us, row 1! Our last experience was row 3, where you can see feet above you during the attraction. Victoria wanted to do Test Track and we rode the single riders line three times. We got in line to do Spaceship Earth because Victoria had not been on it since it was refurbished. As we walked into line, a boy about Victoria's age dashed in front of us. Pretty rude. I thought it was strange he would ride this by himself.

In a minute, a woman with a baby joined him. Victoria gave me a look and I told her to let it go since the mother might have been tending to the baby. Then a grandmother and a child joined them. Then a father and another child joined them, all within a 5 minute time span. I said, "you've got to be kidding me." They all knew what I was talking about and said they are a family and wanted to ride together. I told them it was rude to cut in front of people and not enter the ride as a family, because they were being rude to all of the families behind us. The rotten little boy made comments the entire time we were in line. What a rude little shit that boy was. I let him go on and on, and did take some comfort knowing the family was humiliated by his behavior. The mother's neck and cheeks were red and she tried to get her son to be quiet. Had I continued to engage, all I would have accomplished was that I'd be in argument with a child. The parents tried to get the son to stop and eventually yelled at him, making a scene to get him to stop. What did they expect, sending him to stand in line, knowing people would be upset? I kept thinking, karma.

We left Epcot at noon and tried to motivate each other about not being sad our vacation was coming to an end. We were sad. We had no immediate plans to return to Disney World but we knew we were lucky to have been often this year. We got back to the condo, took showers and finished packing. Victoria took a nap and I read my book, soaking in every last minute of vacation. I was glad we decided to finish the vacation this way, rather than going to the airport from the park.

We dropped the car off and grabbed a luggage cart. We found our way to the Southwest luggage counter and checked our bags. We got through the security and to the gate when we learned our flight was delayed by an hour. We decided to eat dinner at the airport to kill some time. I texted Darlene to let her know we had not been able to find Sandy's DVD or locket. We had checked and checked and checked. I do not think it was in either condo. Before checking out, we checked the lost and found and the housekeeping service at the building where we initially checked in.

Our flight was an easy one and we spent longer than usual waiting for our luggage. We got back to Park Ride and Fly and got home at 10:30pm. We dragged in the luggage and hit the hay.

Movin' on Up .. or over

After doing a full grocery shop, we hurried back to the condo, aware anything which could melt, would melt, in the trunk of the car. We grabbed a luggage cart and hauled the bags up to the condo. I put all of the food away.

Let me repeat: I put all of the food away. I made a pot of coffee and was ready to chill and read my book.

The phone rang.

It was the front office. The woman was talking and talking and talking. All I heard was, "You'll have to move to another unit."

I kept saying, "but I did my grocery shopping."

There was no hot water. There would be no hot water until Tuesday. I kept the phone to my ear and I was thinking, 'who needs hot water, it's hot as hell outside.'

It's like she heard my thoughts. "Ma'am you can't live there without hot water until Tuesday."

Why not? I did grocery shopping. I put all of the clothes away.

I asked if the unit was better than I had now and she said she had two available. I left Victoria napping, and went over to the office and they showed me the two units. I took the unit with the better balcony and view. I went back to the condo and packed up.

Packed up the groceries too. Packed up the clothes. I knew it was too good to be true, to have our unit ready in the morning. I just knew it. I spent the next few days running back and forth to buildings, looking for items we had left behind. What a complete nightmare that was, unpacking twice. I don't recommend it.
